BIOLOGICAL OR SPIRITUAL BEINGS?
A question that has puzzled humans for centuries and that has
as many answers as schools of thought and/or people is: “Are we biological or spiritual
beings?” The answer probably lies on the degree of spirituality of the responder.
I would argue that the majority would believe that they are both, many would
believe that they are just pure biological, and a few would see themselves as completely
spiritual. This article will address this very question that has puzzled
humanity for ages.
Let’s start by clarifying a few concepts. Although most
people do not live their lives with this existential mystery in mind; for most,
this question has probably come up a few times during their lives. Unfortunately,
in most cases, the answer to this question comes from some type of belief system
or identification, and not from experience. When an answer comes from any other
source than experience, then the answer may or may not be correct, but, in either
case, it will not help in any way because if it is not in our experience, it is
completely meaningless regardless of the veracity of the answer and your education,
intelligence, beliefs, etc.
For instance, if you have never tasted orange juice in your
life, you can believe anything you want, but you will never know what orange juice
really is. The fact is that you can read all you want, get all the education
you want, and, at the end, believe all you want, but until you taste it, everything
you have read, heard, and/or believed means nothing. Not until you experience
it. Only at that moment, when it is in your experience, you will know and understand
what orange juice really is. The same principle applies to any beliefs that are
not in our experience.
We also need to clarify what spirituality is. Spirituality is
concerned with the human spirit and commences when we realize that there is
something bigger than us. It starts happening when we start obliterating our
individual boundaries in order to become an integral part of the whole; when we
destroy our misperceptions, misunderstandings, and misidentifications to become
one with everything…when we become universal, a cosmic consciousness.
Finally, in order to answer the question at hand, we need to divide
humanity in three groups depending on the degree of spirituality. The first group,
the “non-spirituals” group, is comprised mostly by scientists, atheists and
non-religious/non-spiritual people, who only believe in what can be proved
scientifically and/or do not believe in anything spiritual at all respectively.
People in this group would argue that we are just biological or material beings
who, like everything else in nature, simply come and go. They believe that we
come to have this experience and that, when done, at our demise, life just ends,
and so do we. There is nothing else beyond. This experience here and now is it,
nothing before and nothing after.
For them, this is the one and only life we have so they rely
completely on the materiality and physicality of this experience. For
scientists, everything is ruled by the laws of nature and everything has a
scientific explanation, even the most mysterious or unexplained events, if not
now at some point in the future. For all others in this group, this life is all
we have. Once we die, that’s it. Therefore, the entire foundation of this group
is based on “proving” or no-believing respectively and, as such, they do not
believe in reincarnation.
The second group, the “semi-spirituals”, is comprised mostly
by people who follow some type of religion, sect, discipline, ideology or philosophy,
and who are somewhat spiritual. They are not ready or willing to put the time
and effort it that takes to explore fully this aspect of their lives. People in
this group would argue that we are both, a physical or biological body with a
spiritual component (also called: soul, spirit, vital source, substance,
essence, conscience, etc.). This is the largest of all of the three groups, even
larger than the first and third group combined.
This group relies on and identifies mostly with the body and
its physicality but believes in the existence of something bigger than themselves,
a God or Gods, a state of being, a consciousness, etc. Unfortunately, for some
reason, they are not able to make the transition to the next group and continue
to live a life that is primarily biological with some degree of spirituality. Therefore,
the entire foundation of this group is based on “believing” and, as such, some
in this group believe in reincarnation and others do not, depending on the
religion, discipline, sect, ideology or philosophy they follow.
The third group, the “spiritual” group, is comprised mostly
by deeply spiritual people who recognize spirituality at the center of their
lives, existence, and everything in their experience. People in this group would
argue that we are pure spiritual or energetic beings with a body to have this human
experience. They spend their lives seeking answers and exploring the depths of
our potential and our own divine nature. For this group, being born and dying
do not exist as life is eternal. We are just having this human experience. And
to do that, we need a body, a vehicle, to be able to have this experience.
Although it sounds similar, there is a huge difference between
being biological with some spirituality versus being completely spiritual with some
materiality to have this human experience. This difference cannot be any clearer
stated by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin in his statement: “We are not human beings
having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human
experience.” Therefore, the entire foundation of this group is based on “experiencing”
and, as such, reincarnation is at the center of their paradigm.
As you can see, each group has its own path to the final destination.
The first group uses proof, the second belief, and the third experience. All
three paths can potentially take you to the same final destination or goal, but,
for the first two, it is very difficult to get there by just trying to prove or
believing. Only the third path, only by working hard at your own development,
by understanding your own nature, and by seeing clearly what is important and
what is not, can you have a better chance to get to the desired destination,
your own connection with your true nature, your divine nature, your enlightenment
or sainthood.
Whatever you believe or not is not important. At the end,
this is your life and your own making. You are the captain of your life and the
steerer of your own boat. As such, your life is your own making and you are the
only one responsible for it. Whatever you want to believe or not is your doing.
But if this and many other existential questions are not in your mind day in and
day out, then you are not seeking, you are not questioning and, therefore, you
are not on the path, you are not awake or awake enough, you are not working on
yourself, and you are not striving hard enough for your full potential and the
only thing that is important in life, your growth, your evolution, your destiny:
to be one with the creation…with the creator. True transformation only comes by
destroying whom you think you are in order to give room to whom you really are!
