IS SUCCESS REAL?

Disciple: “Master, what does one need to achieve success…to be successful?”

Master: “Can you grab with your hands the early morning mist?”

Disciple: “No, master. It is not possible. I can feel it but I cannot grab it.”

Master: “Success, and its opposite, failure, like the mist, can be experienced but cannot be attained.”

Disciple: “I am completely lost, Master.”

Master: “They are just judgements. They do not really exist. People, in their need to grade and judge, feel the need to apply a judgement to everything they do. It helps them to make sense of things. Success is applied when the results are as expected, positive, or beneficial to the individual(s) affected. Otherwise, failure is applied.

Neither one exists. What someone calls success, someone else may call failure; and what someone calls failure, someone else may call success. Because of their subjective and completely impermanent nature, they cannot last. They are basically temporary, short-lived illusions that give a false state of being. What one makes of them is what matters!

For an individual or group, success can be manifested as fame, wealth, power and/or social status; but this success can also be a curse because it can trap the affected individual(s) in an illusory reality that is not real (an illusion of triumph), taking him/her or them away from what is important in life, one’s own divine purpose.

Failure, on the other hand, can be detrimental if seen just as a failure, but it can also be a stepping stone to growth and success if seen as a challenge. Life normalcy and failure can be great springboards to awaken and pursue one’s divine purpose because one is not enticed with vanity, glamour, fame, pleasure, power, etc. as privileged people commonly are.”

Disciple: “So, does one need to worry about success or failure?”

Master: “No. If one does not do what one cannot do, that is fine. However, if one does not do what one can do, that is a shame! All one needs to do is to try his/her best in everything one does. That’s all one can do.”

Disciple: “So, how can one do the best in everything one does?”

Master: “For that, one must have the right recipe.”

Disciple: “Recipe?”

Master: “Yes. Success or failure is just a result. Before you can reach a result, a recipe must be followed. Today’s society and education put too much emphasis on results, but results are not the most important. The recipe or process is! If the process is right, a positive result is more likely to be obtained. Otherwise, if the process is wrong, then a negative or unsatisfactory result is more likely to be obtained. It is just like baking. In this case, bread is the final result. How good or bad the bread is depends on the recipe or process. If one has the right ingredients and follow the correct instructions, the bread should be good. Otherwise, something will be wrong with the bread.”

Disciple: “But, doesn’t everyone want to be successful in what they do?”

Master: “Yes, but the end does not always justify the means!”

Disciple: “I do not understand, honorable Sir.”

Master: “When one is obsessed with getting a positive result, when one is blinded by certain beliefs, in many cases, one will do whatever is necessary to get the desired results. This is not right when the methods used are dishonest or harmful to others, nature or at the expense of the planet.

We see this everywhere today. In order to make a buck, to respond to some investors or to get certain results desired, individuals, institutions, organizations, and even nations will do anything regardless of the damage caused during the process. Misinformation, lies, and trickery are used, and even wars are fought, in order to get a desired outcome. This is dishonest, improper, and detrimental to society, humanity and the planet. It is shameful regardless of how they try to dress it, which in many occasions, they go through great lengths to try to cover up the truth so they can get away with the results.

Success and failure are not important. What is important is the lesson associated with each and every experience one has in life. If one is successful at doing something but does not learn anything, then the lesson or experience is a failure from the personal growth standpoint. On the other hand, if one fails at doing something but learns from this failure, then the lesson or experience is a success from the personal growth standpoint. In this case, failure is more important than success because, unfortunately, it is what most human beings use to learn and grow.

Life is a series of experiences or lessons. It is not important the type, quantity or gravity of the experiences. It only matters how one reacts to them. One’s growth depends on it!”
