BECOMING NOBODY

It is sad and at times discouraging to see the degradation happening to our society and values, to our humanity. We live in a society where being normal is not good enough, where we all must be “special.” Since a young age, all the adults around us wanted us to be or do what they, most of the time, could not be or do. They wanted us to be better, famous, rich, successful, smarter, or some other flavor of “special.” And if they did not accomplish this goal completely, we did it to ourselves by believing all this misinformation and allowing it to influence who we are.

Most of us grew up with a hero, superstar, and/or self-centered-based society, where being normal is perceived as weak, sheepish (submissive), and “dumbish.” We grew up imitating these heroes, wanting to have superpowers, and wishing to able to do what others could not. It is a society obsessed with the life of the “rich and famous,” idea that is continually thrown in our faces by the media, including movie stars, sportsmen and women, and successful business men and women. And finally, it is a society based on a self-centered education where we are at the center of the universe and where we, as individuals, are more and more important as time passes, adding more lumber to the fire.

During our most important and vulnerable years of learning and developing a sound personality, we were exposed to all these influences, making us develop a sense of lacking, of not good enough. By not having the right guidance and education during those years, some of us perceived all these influences and information as important, and created an illusion of importance to compensate with our sensation of insufficiency. In other words, some of us were brought up thinking that we were special, and we believed it. The fact is that the key to living a meaningful life is learning to distinguish between our subjective perception and the objective reality.

When we perceive life as a race against everyone and everything, when we are living all the time comparing to others, when we are acting to force a desired image of ourselves unto others, and when everything around us is selling us an image of importance, more than likely the product will be this sense of importance, of special. This distortion in our perception only blinds us more and binds us to an illusory reality that is far from real.

The truth is that we just lost perspective of reality and we do not realize it. In a universe of around 93 billion light years in diameter and with 10 septillion planets and stars (1025, a 1 followed by 25 zeros), any of us thinking that we are a big thing is simply a preposterous idea. In reality, if tomorrow not you or the planet but our entire solar system were to disappear, it would not be even noticed or missed by the rest of the universe. That is how insignificant we are! So, for some people to think that they are special, or have delusions of greatness, is not just ridiculous but also utterly absurd, regardless of how smart, famous, rich, knowledgeable, etc. they are.

This is when becoming nobody, acknowledging our unimportance, is one of the most important steps that we can take to liberate ourselves from the grips of the self-centeredness and greatness which are mainly responsible for many of life’s difficulties. This perception of greatness, of special, can only be counterproductive to the rest of humanity and to the planet. This is the cause of so many of the problems that we are experiencing today as humans, as a race, and as a planet.

While everyone is racing to be someone, we have to race to be nobody. While everyone is trying to impress everyone else with their smarts, beauty, knowledge, wealth, abilities, etc., we have to impress with our humbleness. While everyone is accumulating more and more material things, we have to accumulate nothingness. While everyone is acknowledging their importance, we have to acknowledge our insignificance. And while everyone is working to be special, we have to work on our ordinariness The truth is that all we need is enough to survive comfortably, whatever that means to you, so we can spend the rest of our efforts to become nobody. Only at that time, the doors to our full potential as a human being will be available.

The benefits of being a nobody are many. Being a nobody allows us to truly experience and appreciate the profoundness of this life, the sublime…divinity; frees us from the irrational pressures and expectations of an uncertain world; gives us the humility to realize that it is our struggles and our character what define us, and not our desires; liberates us from the grip of materiality and self-centeredness, giving us the chance to explore and seek our true meaning and potential; and allows seeing reality in its true form and gives us the chance to do what we can to shape it into what we wish it were.

We are nobody whether you accept it or not! Your idea of superiority, grandeur, or of special is your own idea, your own creation. We do not own anything and are not owed anything either! We are less than a speck of dust compared to the immensity of the universe. The sooner you realize this, the sooner you can do something about it. And there is a lot you can do to improve this world. It will not be easy, but this is precisely why is important and valuable. We are each a negligible part of a vast cosmic entity, and there really is something beautiful about that if you choose to see it for what it is. Only at this point, only when you embrace nothingness, will you have a chance to become something!
