CAN WE HEAL OURSELVES? (PART 3 of 3)

"Nobody heals being the same person. Healing is a journey of self-transformation!" - Mao

Conclusion

In part 1, the introduction, I defined what health and disease were, categorized diseases, and showed through statistics that although contagious or communicable diseases were, and still are, prevalent in low-income countries, non-contagious or non-communicable diseases are now prevalent in high income countries, including mental health disorders, which have been growing rapidly in recent decades. In part 2, the causes, I categorized and described the causes one by one. The well-known causes, including genetics, the environment, and life’s choices, are the most common used causes to explain and treat diseases and disorders by mainstream medicine while complementary and alternative medicine use the lesser-known causes, including the brain/mind, past experiences, emotions, biology, energy, and education and beliefs, in addition to the well-known causes. In part 3, I am going to put all this together and look at disease and healing from a completely new perspective.

Let me start by addressing the well-known causes. Yes, it is correct that genetics, the environment and the choices we make are very important to identify the causes, treatment and prevention of diseases in some cases. In fact, scientifically we know that genetically we have a certain predisposition or make up (DNA) that determines who we are physically, mentally and emotionally. However, through gene mutations (genetics) and gene expressions (epigenetics), who we were designed to be can change dynamically responding to our different stages of growth and the environment.

Therefore, it is not really genetics but a newer science, epigenetics, that is important because it is the one that studies the changes in organisms caused by modification of gene expression rather than alteration of the genetic code itself. In other words, regardless of our genetic predisposition (DNA), it is the environment and our life’s choices which will dictate the gene expression that will happen in our bodies (which genes get activated and which ones do not.) Consequently, it is not our genetics or what we inherited from our ancestors but our environment and decisions which will ultimately decide what happens to us.

If so, then why is it that, even if we follow all the recommendations from the health organizations, we are still getting sick? Why is it that if we eat well, exercise, have a balanced life, work, rest, etc., we are still becoming chronically sick? Because although diseases are manifested in our physiology, the root causes of diseases are not necessarily easily identifiable and sometimes not even material. The true root causes of almost every dis-ease lie deep within every person that is ill. In essence, although we have been thinking that diseases are something we catch or from some external source like a parasite, virus, …, or even cancer, we are usually the ones who create every illness that we experience, be it on a subconscious or an unconscious level.

In addition to our choices and what we have been doing to ourselves, governments, industries, companies and even people have been keeping us in the dark about how food is produced; how cattle, chickens, pigs, and fish are raised and what are raised with; what chemicals and pesticides are used in the water, the air, the hygiene products we use (make up, creams, deodorant, perfumes, shampoos, etc.), the clothes we wear, furniture, cars, in construction (inside and outside our homes and offices), etc.; and what all this radiation from security scanners, phones, networks, x-rays, MRI’s, etc. are doing to us. We have been inundated with antibiotics, drugs, pesticides, chemicals, metals and radiation in everything that we eat and do, and in everything around us, poisoning and polluting our bodies and minds constantly. The problem is that most people are not aware of what is happening, or if they are, they are not doing anything about it.

"Health is our responsibility, and not the responsibility of others!" - Mao

Once again, it is true that our environment is very important, but more important than that are the choices that we make. On the one hand, we need to choose a clean, nice environment where we and our families can live and prosper and need to learn and make rational decisions about our choices when it comes to diet, home, work, relationships, entertainment, etc. Basically, about everything in life! There are a lot of powerful forces working against us. In a greedy society, where money is all that matters, our health and well-being are not a priority. Making a buck is! All we need to do is to learn and be conscious of what is working against us (the products of corporations and what they are doing), to do everything in your power to avoid or remedy what is happening (watch carefully what we eat, drink, wear, buy, use, etc.), and to not play the game that society wants us to play.

On the other hand, we are now entering the territory of the lesser-known causes, it is the way we choose to use our mind and the way we respond to our outer world, how we perceive it and our response, what is really going to make us sick. For instance, every job has its obligations, with those obligations come stress, and with stress can come sickness and even death, according to the latest health reports. But it is not really stress that will kill us, it is the way we choose to process stress that will either make us sick or not. The body in essence is a reflection of our inner thoughts, emotions and beliefs. Every single cell in our body has its own intelligence and is able to listen to what we are thinking, hear what we are saying, and feel what we are expressing emotionally and through our actions.

So, how does dis-ease really get manifested in the body? In addition to the environment, life’s choices, and the poisoning and pollution in our bodies, disease can manifest in the body from toxic thinking, toxic emotions and toxic chemicals produced in our body as a reaction to inner and outer variables. As mostly we, with outside influence, cause the body to be in a state of distress and unbalance (disharmony), creating toxic chemicals to compensate. As we do this repeatedly, as we cause our body to be in a state of degeneration and stagnation, we then become susceptible to attract viruses, harmful bacteria, parasites, fungi, etc.; store toxic chemicals from food and pollution since we will not be detoxifying properly; create or allow the creation of degenerative cells like cancer, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, etc.; and allow genes to change or get activated bringing eventually illness.

Many times, though, the triggering emotional and mental factors for a specific disease occurred many months to even years before the manifestation of the illness itself. It is key to discover the true root causes that triggered the manifestation of the illness. Even conditions such as the so-called common cold and the flu may have distinct emotional and mental factors contributing to them.

It is here where we have to step in. This is not an excuse for delegating our health to others. Health is our responsibility, and not the responsibility of others, including the government, health system, spouses, parents, doctors, and/or drugs. Until we understand this, we have very little chance to really heal, to be all we can be, at least from the physical, mental and emotional standpoint. If the health care system and doctors are not taking in consideration the complexity of the human body and mind together and all the potential causes (well-known as well as the lesser-known causes), then we must take our health into our own hands and must appeal to complementary and alternative medicine practitioners and doctors, which have the time to look at the body in a different light.

Any time we are sick in general, we need to listen to our body and hear what it is telling us. Instead of always looking for, or shopping for, a magic doctor, pill or supplement, we need to be more conscious of our bodies. If we are chronically sick, then we need to assume full responsibility for our own health. In most cases, no doctor or drug can cure us of any illness. We have to do it ourselves! They can help and guide us, but we have to do it ourselves, either by believing that they can heal us or by healing ourselves.

The big secret that many health organizations, industries, and companies don’t want us to know is that the body was designed for perfect health. Every single cell in our body has its own intelligence and is programmed for optimum functioning. Due to this fact, the body knows exactly how to heal itself no matter what illness, injury or imbalance that may be present. All we need to do in most cases is get out of the way and allow it to do what it was designed to do.

In fact, when we really analyze and reflect in the way that we have been living, we will be amazed at how resilient and marvelous the human body and mind are. Most of us have been unintentionally working really hard on hurting our bodies and minds all of our lives and they have responded completely the opposite, most of the time with health and kindness. But as we age, the metabolism slows down and they will not be able to do that for much longer. In other words, some of us have been making ourselves sick by the way we have been living, thinking, feeling and by the choices that we have made, including the environment.

Most of the time, we are the ones that are doing everything to interfere with the natural process of health and happiness. We are simply disrupting this natural process by the way that we eat, behave, act and even think and feel. When we eat to satisfy our minds and not our bodies, when we behave and act negatively or violently, when we stress about the past, present and future, when our thoughts are sending us for the rides of our lives, and when past experiences are haunting us all the time and are anchoring us to the past instead of the present, we are disrupting the natural process of restoring and healing our bodies and are activating other processes that, in the long run, are going to be detrimental to our health, and, in many cases, our sanity.

“Getting sick is not normal, and definitely not true. We must take our health in our hands!” - Mao

To conclude, there is no a magic formula, but if you follow these rules below, you will improve your health or will even heal yourself completely.

(1) Take responsibility for your health. Do not delegate this responsibility to others.

(2) Stop being ignorant. Getting sick is not normal and definitely not true. We must take our health in our hands! We must set our minds and beliefs straight so we enable ourselves with the tools for success, for health. The human body is an almost, if not, perfect machine. Learn what you should and should not eat, drink, do, wear, etc.

(3) Commit to do everything required to regain your health, including adding or making changes to your diet, exercise, meditation, job, relationships, etc. This is your life and the only life you have right now. It depends on you and your commitment to your health! Look into detoxification of your body through diet and your mind through meditation.

(4) Forgive those that have trespassed you and, more importantly, forgive yourself for those you have trespassed. Traumatic past experiences are the source of many illnesses. You have a choice: you can be a victim or you can be a mentally healthy individual. Forgiveness and taking responsibility are the key.

(5) Change your diet, environment, and life’s choices to fit your new health path. Your well-being, the well-being of your family and your life depend on it.

(6) Learn how to work and manage your thoughts and emotions. Mindfulness, meditation, and personal development (spirituality) are key tools for this purpose.

While the above might feel monumental, with dedication, time and proper guidance all is possible. Just take it slowly and start making small changes. In a few months or years, you will be there. Look for the help of experts or masters to guide you through this gradual process successfully.

Keep in mind that you are not a material but a spiritual, energetic being. You have been identifying with your body and mind for too long. Hopefully, through this process of cleansing your body and mind, you get a glimpse of your true nature, a pure, divine essence.
