TAKING THINGS FOR GRANTED

Since our discovery and learning period from early age, we were taught, or learned about, what a nose, arm, tree, flower, dog, tiger, and everything else we know is. We learned the relationship between words and tangible or intangible things and took them as they were given to us. We were taught, “this is your nose, this is your arm, that is a tree, that is a cat, this is a shoe, etc.,” but we neither questioned those things, nor tried to find out the real definition, nature or essence of all of them. In other words, do we really know what all these things are? Do we understand them? Have we spent enough time observing, studying, and trying to understand them? And the answer is a resounding “no.” We have taken everything for granted. We know it; it works; it is there and fine; therefore, we do not have to worry about it. We have done it with ourselves, our health, behavior, emotions, body, etc. and with everything else. “That’s a tree!” “Oh, look how pretty that flower is!” “This water is so refreshing!” But do we understand what a tree, flower or water really is or have we just taken them for granted?

The truth is that we, human beings, do not understand anything completely. Nothing! We have learned about things, have made conclusions about what they are, and have taken them for granted, which means that we do not have to think about them anymore. Although we do not understand them completely, we have learned to USE them for our wellbeing, but we do not have even the most remote idea about them. What we tend to forget is that life can change in an instance, and if we do not live to the fullest at every single moment, it is because we are taking everything and everyone for granted. For instance, if we cannot breathe, then, only at that moment, do we learn the value of our nose, lungs, air and just being alive; if we cannot eat, then we learn the value of food; if we lose a friend, then we learn the value of company or a relationship; and the same formula, we have been applying to everything and everyone in our lives.

We have been living completely blinded by our own definitions and cannot longer see the beauty, complexity, and intelligence of everything and everyone that surrounds us. We cannot be spiritual or grow to our full potential, if we continue to live asleep. We do not have to wait until we lose something to understand and value it, to be thankful that it is part of our world. We must wake up, become aware, LIVE CONSCIOUSLY, and learn to appreciate and BE THANKFUL for everything and everyone at all times. Only then, do we have a chance to grow and evolve to our full potential as human beings!
