THE POWER OF SILENCE

Image
Subscribe  Our noise-saturated outer world contrasts sharply with our inner world of silence. We are inundated daily not only by human noise (i.e., conversations, laughter, crying, singing, yelling, etc.) at home, the workplace, and everywhere else; but also, by the constant, relentless, attention-getter technology of today (i.e., phones, tablets, computers, etc. with their rings and notifications) and by the seemingly endless roar of machines, tools, and toys. The problem is that although we are surrounded by it, we don’t really notice it because we have gotten accustomed to it. But when this world feels overwhelming and chaos seems to be getting the best of us, we always have a place of refuge and a powerful antidote, our inner-self and silence. Silence can be defined as the complete absence of sound. Although this generic definition is very comprehensive, in the personal development or spirituality realm, we are more interested in the human-created sound because most...

THE NEED TO CONTROL

Image
Subscribe  It is understandable to have the need for some control over our lives, the feeling or sense that we are in control and that life is going in the right direction, so we can direct our lives in pursuit of our goals and passions. However, when the need for control becomes excessive, it can cause more harm than good wherever applied, whether it is in your relationships, business, career, or your overall sense of wellbeing. Many people hold onto control, consciously sometimes but mostly unconsciously, thinking that control is the best path to take, the straightest line between them and a desired goal or outcome. But what they do not realize is that control is the product of our attachment to outcomes, our ...

LIFE AS A CONTINUOUS HOLIDAY

Image
The end of the year is approaching and the holiday season is here. Whether it is called the Christmas Season, the Holiday Season, or just the Holidays, it is an annually recurring period recognized by most countries that generally runs from November to early January. It is the time of the year that you either look forward to and anticipate or totally dread. For most, it is a season of celebration, family, parties, gratitude, reflection, melancholy, joy, presents, food, drinks, music, hugs and smiles. For some, it is a time of stress, full of obligations and responsibilities. And for a few, it is a time of reflection and introspection. For Americans and Canadians, the season starts with Thanksgiving Day and ends with New Year’s Day. For other countries, it starts with Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa (Africa) and ends with New Year’s Day or the Three Kings’ Day (January 6). For those that look forward to these holidays, it is a special period of the year regardless of age, where most of...

Depending on your age, you may have had relationships with your parents or caregivers, siblings, relatives, loved ones, friends, teammates, mentors, bosses, coworkers, etc. As social creatures, human beings need relationships. In fact, we could easily state that the quality of our relationships will determine the quality of our lives . So, if relationships are so important and we have so many, why is that we struggle so much with them? Why are they so difficult? To answer this question, we will need to dig deep into our own nature, the complex human nature. Let’s start by defining a relationship. According to the Oxford dictionary, a relationship can be defined as the way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are connected, or the state of being connected; the way in which two or more people or groups regard and behave towa...
