A Safe Place
Today, while walking along a path through nature, I found a small bird struggling on the ground. Something had happened to one of its wings. I lifted it gently into my hands. I could not take away its pain. I could not undo what had happened or make it understand why it could no longer fly. There was very little I could do.
Except give it a safe place.
And perhaps there is something profoundly human in that.
Every day, we encounter people with broken wings. They may still smile. Still work. Still laugh. Still appear strong. Yet we cannot see the roads they have walked, the wounds they carry, the losses they have endured, or the battles quietly unfolding within them.
Sometimes we can help. We can offer a hand, an answer, a way forward. But sometimes there is nothing for us to fix.
Except give them a safe place.
A place where they do not have to be strong. Where nothing needs to be explained. Where tears need no apology and silence needs no words. Where peace becomes the ground beneath them, understanding the shelter around them, and love the warmth that reminds them they are not alone.
Perhaps we underestimate the healing power of simply being there. A hand held without questions. An embrace without advice. A presence that quietly says, You do not have to fly right now. You are safe here.
We are often so eager to remove another person's pain that we forget: Not every wound is ours to heal. Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer is simply a safe place for broken wings to rest.
Perhaps healing does not always need our answers. Sometimes it simply needs our presence.
So be the place where judgment ends. Be the silence that listens. Be the arms that ask for nothing. Be the peace someone cannot yet find within themselves. Be the safe place where broken wings are allowed to heal.
And when those wings begin to remember their strength, do not hold tighter because you were the one who offered shelter or were there for them.
Love was never meant to become another cage.
Open your hands. Let them rise. And watch them fly.
