The Blindness of Being Right
The moment we become certain that we see reality exactly as it is, we may have already stopped seeing it clearly. Perhaps one of the greatest illusions of the human mind is believing that our view of the world is the world.
We look at life through the lens of our upbringing, experiences, culture, fears, wounds, beliefs, and conditioning. Then, somewhere along the way, we forget that we are looking through a lens at all.
We mistake what we see for all there is to see.
And once we become certain that we possess the truth, we stop searching for it.
Perhaps this is one of the great struggles of our time. We speak, but rarely listen. We defend before we understand. We surround ourselves with voices that confirm what we already believe and distance ourselves from those that challenge it.
But a mind that can no longer be challenged can no longer grow.
You do not have to agree with someone to listen. You do not have to abandon your beliefs to consider theirs. Another perspective does not have to threaten your own.
It simply opens another window.
And through that window, you may see something that was invisible from where you were standing.
Our differences are not obstacles. They can be invitations to see more.
Sometimes another perspective strengthens what we believe. Sometimes it reveals something we had never considered. And sometimes it reveals the most difficult truth of all: the fact that we were wrong.
There is freedom in being able to say, “I did not see that before.” That is not weakness. That is growth. Wisdom is not knowing everything. It is remaining open enough to discover how much we still do not know.
So, listen. Especially when you disagree. Listen not to respond, defend, or win, but to understand. Hold your beliefs deeply, but never so tightly that truth itself cannot change them.
The person standing across from you may not possess the whole truth. But neither do you.
Perhaps each of us is standing at a different window, looking upon the same infinite sky.
Loosen your grip on the need to be right. Become curious again. Open another window. Let another light enter. You may not change what you believe. But you may finally see beyond the limits of what you once believed was possible.
And perhaps awakening begins the moment we stop needing reality to fit within the boundaries of our own point of view, and begin to recognize the hidden patterns that shape not only how we see life, but how we live it.
Because when we change the lens through which we see life, we open the possibility of changing the life we see.
