Disciple: “Can you tell me more about the recipe?”

Master: “If one looks at anything one has done regardless of the complexity, one can see the ingredients of this recipe in what was done. The recipe does not guarantee the results, but being aware of the recipe is important because it makes one aware of what is needed to do the best one can, potentially minimizing the risk of failure.

This recipe is comprised of the following ingredients: determination, self-discipline, passion, patience, perseverance, hard work, and in some cases, skill. How good the end result is depends on the quantity and/or quality of each of these ingredients. This recipe applies to absolutely everything one does in life, whether it is sports, arts, business, or even life.”

Disciple: “Can you elaborate, Sir?”

Master: “For that, we need to look at each of the ingredients.

‘Determination’ is the feeling or force that pushes one to persevere towards a difficult goal in spite of obstacles, difficulties, or failures along the way. It serves to motivate behavior that will help achieve one's goal. It may or may not be at the beginning of what one is doing, but it definitely becomes stronger as you persist and work at a task or goal.

‘Self-Discipline’ is the ability or force to control one's feelings, overcome one's weaknesses and pursue what one thinks is right despite temptations to abandon it. It is that pushing forward force that does not allow one to quit and keeps one going.

‘Passion’ is a strong and barely controllable emotion or force that drives one to do something. One cannot do his/her best if one is not passionate about what one is doing. Passion means involvement and love for what one is doing. Otherwise, mediocracy arises and permeates the task at hand.

‘Patience’ is that capacity or force to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry, upset or discouraged, especially when under strain, when faced with longer-term difficulties, or when waiting for long periods of time.

‘Perseverance’ is that persistence or force that keeps one doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving results. Together with self-discipline and patience, it is that force that keeps pushing one forward and does not allow one to quit.

‘Hard work’ is a great deal of effort or endurance placed when trying to achieve something. It is the quantity and quality of physical, mental and/or emotional effort placed to accomplish something.

‘Skill’ is the ability to do something well (expertise).”

Disciple: “Are those all the ingredients or does one need anything else?”

Master: “To go somewhere sailing, it is not enough to have a boat, sails, an engine, food and water, lifeboats, life bests, etc. One also needs a compass to keep the boat going in the right direction. The same applies to everything one does. One also needs integrity, honesty and a social/universal consciousness.

Physical, mental and emotional efforts are not enough when doing something. One MUST have a moral compass that leads one to do the right thing even if it is at the expense of the results. Otherwise, one might be dishonest to others, to the planet, and more importantly, to one’s self. This is why the process is so important. If planned correctly, a positive result can be obtained in the right way most of the time, but for that, it requires commitment to do the right thing, the right way.

Integrity and honesty are qualities of being. Integrity has to do with being honest and having strong moral principles (uprightness) and honesty has to do with being fair and truthful, free of deceit and untruthfulness, sincere. A Social or universal consciousness can only happen when one loses his/her individuality and the greed that comes with it and becomes part of everyone and everything. In short, when one keeps in mind the wellbeing of everyone and everything, not just my wellbeing or the wellbeing of whom one represents.

Finally, there is always a ‘luck’ factor. As part of planning, one tries to foresee every possible variable that may affect the process and, at the end, the result. However, foreseeing everything is almost impossible. Nations and government may change policies; companies may change directions; personal, team, company, or global catastrophes may happen; financial changes or bankruptcies may happen; time to market may not be appropriate or timely; and even environmental or global disruptions may happen like pandemics, storms, floods, social unrest, etc.; which are impossible to foresee and can change the outcome of a task at any time.”

Disciple: “Are all the ingredients of the same value or are some more important than others?”

Master: “Doing the right thing, the best way one can, and in the right way should always be what drives anything one does. Therefore, the moral compass is the most important and must always be present in everything one does, in what one is. Because of the lack of this moral compass, this world is where it is right now. If you are referring to the other ingredients, ambitious personal or professional goals require a high tolerance for pain, monotony, and boredom as well as a large amount of patience, discipline, passion, perseverance and a lot of hard work, making them the most important.

But from all these other ingredients, passion is by far the most important. Only when one is passionate about something, one can make a difference. The best works in art, architecture, science and so on in history have been made by passionate people. It is simple. There are only two ways to act in life: with love or with fear. If one does something for a paycheck, for obligation, or because one does not want to fail a test, lose a house, be fired, disappoint a friend, etc., then one is acting out of fear.

Only when one is completely involved and loves what one does, only then, one can make a difference. If one cannot do things with passion, one should not do them at all. In this case, one should make the necessary changes in life to be able to be passionate about all one does. Otherwise, there is no growth, no involvement, no love, resulting in mediocracy, unsatisfaction, unhappiness and disappointment. When one does things with love, it doesn’t matter what one does. Only accomplishment, beauty and/or excellence can be the result. Not matter how small is what one does! Therefore, in the personal life, success and failure do not matter as long as one does his/her best!”
