…IT IS UP TO YOU!
Most people have grown up trusting the government,
institutions, companies and individuals to do the right thing; and up to
certain point, they have delivered. The problem is that the line between trust
and distrust is not clearly marked, it is in a gray zone; and unfortunately,
has been slipping down toward distrust more and more as time passes. All these
leaders, institutions, companies, and individuals were, and are, supposed to
work for us, for our wellbeing, for the wellbeing of everyone and everything;
but that is not the feeling that they are leaving us with these days.
It seems that the eternal story of the wolf dressed as a
sheep is repeating again. The story where everything starts out good, but as
time passes, he/she starts slipping to the other side and ends up using all
his/her power and money to do the wrong things, all camouflaged amongst the
good ones or all under some type of righteous banner or umbrella. We have been
led to believe through advertisement, fixed studies (paid studies to mislead us),
slogans and pure propaganda that they are the good guys, that we can put our
trust in them, that they are working for us 7/24/365, and that we have nothing
to worry about. But sometimes the truth lies far from it.
The truth is that most leaders are not working for us, but
for themselves, to fill their pockets or to fulfill their ambitions; that most
institutions, once they taste power, all they want is more power by
manipulating people; that most companies have lost their social conscious and
are there to sell you anything to make a buck for their investors and for
themselves without almost any consideration for the damage that those products
will have on the users and the planet; and that many people are not even there
to help you anymore but to see how they can get something out of you, out of
the rest of us.
Throughout human history, money and power have always been
king but it seems more now than ever where individuals and institutions are
willing to sell their souls to make a buck…to have more power. If so, what can
we do? Is there anything that we can do? It seems that lately we do not count
anymore. Well, the answer is a definite “yes.” We DO count! But to really
count, we have to start from the inside out, from ourselves first and then out
working together for a common goal. Following are some guidelines that may
help.
The first step is to wake up and realize what is
going on all around you. This pandemic, the financial stress, the violence and
the chaos and negativity in which we are living should be good signs that
something is way off and that we cannot continue living the way we have been.
This should be a good shake up for everyone. Wake up! Wake up! Wake up! If you
do not wake up, if you continue taking things as they are, you are just part of
the problem. And in times like these, we cannot afford to be asleep anymore!
Wake up!
The second step is to get informed, well informed,
from reliable sources, about what is happening in the areas you are interested
in. Look at what is happening with our government, our so-called “democracy,”
the continuous lying to get what they want, the systematic corruption, and so
on. Look at our food and hygiene industries. These industries are keeping
really quiet, to the point of secrecy, how they raise animals and grow food so you
continue to consume blissfully ignorant. Forget about the morality of eating
meat. Let’s put morality aside. If you were to look just at the inhumanity of
how most animals are raised, treated, and killed, you would probably never eat
meat again. Just the distance between that process and you, the secrecy behind it, is what is allowing
you to continue eating meat. Research more about how veal, lamb and chickens
are raised. I promise you will be completely surprised, if not completely
disgusted.
Read about the amount of chemicals and poison ingredients
used in processed food and hygiene products. It is shameful and disgusting to
know that the institutions that are supposed to protect us like the FDA, EPA,
etc. in the U.S., are closing their eyes and are yielding to money poured to
them by large corporations and industries; and that companies are
systematically poisoning you, getting you fat, destroying your health, and
exploiting and destroying animals, vegetation and the planet in general with no
conscious or remorse at all, not for the human wellbeing but for their own and
their investors’ wellbeing.
Get informed about the news organizations with their
targeted news, their agendas, their sensationalistic news based on fear, their
radical positions, etc. And look at what high technology companies like Facebook,
Google, Pinterest, Instagram, etc. are doing in terms of controlling your life,
the way you consume, to the point that they are creating needs and controlling
your behavior through very sophisticated and targeted algorithms based on large
amounts of data collected on you. And continue with other industries like pesticides,
fertilizers, fracking, arms, pharmaceuticals, automobile, and cattle; and the
influence that some very rich people and companies have on the government;
etc.; etc.; etc. In fact, almost anywhere where you look these days, you will
find some really scary or disgusting reality.
The third step is to make personal changes in your
life according to your own criteria, to what you want to be. This is by far the
most important thing that you can do. Do not panic or be more fearful about
what is happening. This has been happening forever throughout human history at
different levels, perhaps not so pronounced before, but we just have more
information and better ways to find it these days. Human greed and the need for
power have always existed. They are not new. We just need to be more aware so
we can make the appropriate changes in our life, and not get more scared, fearful,
or resentful. What they do is not that important once you are aware. You always
have a choice. Just make sure you make your choices informed and consciously. You
do not have to live the way they want you to live. Live your life the way you
want to live! Last week’s article titled “Do not let it affect you”
addresses this step.
And the fourth and final step is for you to do whatever
you can to help change what is happening around you. There are simple
things that you can do that can go very far, like voting during elections,
being positive, smiling more often, and changing yourself instead of trying to
change the outside. If you do not like how things are being managed, what
institutions are doing, or what products companies are making or putting out,
then vote with your opinion (elections) and vote with your dollars (where and
what you buy), buy organic food or grow your own food if you can, reduce or
turn off the TV and social media, create your own personal space, etc. With
some minor changes, you can make a big difference in your life and the life of
the people around you.
In the
end, the best thing that we can do is not to be part of the problem. It is ok
if you are not interested in protesting, speaking out against things, etc. The
best way to solve this problem is from inside out, from each of us out, from
negativity to positivity, from darkness to light, and from fear to love. What
is happening around us, like life, cannot be changed from the outside. It must
be changed from the inside out. Change yourself, and you will change your
family and friends; and they will change their family and friends; and so on. In
the end, it is up to you! You may not be able to change the world but you can
change your world! Rumi once said, “Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to
change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” You are the change that the
world needs. That’s how important you are!
