WORRYING YOURSELF SICK?

Image
We all have heard the expression “he/she worried him/herself sick.” The question is, can we really think or worry ourselves sick? Awareness of the mind-body connection is by no means new. Until approximately 300 years ago, virtually every system of medicine throughout the world treated the mind and body as a whole. But during the 17th century, the Western world started to see the mind and body as two distinct entities. In this view, the body was kind of like a machine, complete with replaceable, independent parts, with no connection whatsoever to the mind, or what has commonly been known as “Newtonian medicine”. This Western viewpoint had definite benefits, acting as the foundation for advances in surgery, trauma care, pharmaceuticals, and other areas of allopathic medicine. However, it also greatly reduced scientific inquiry into humans' emotional, spiritual and energetic life, and downplayed our innate ability to heal. In the 20th century, this view gradually started to chan...

HAPPINESS IS A DECISION!

Image
We have been sold on the idea that happiness is a goal, a destination…that it is out there, outside and needs to be found, reached or acquired. We have been told that if we read, study, work, have a family, and acquire material things, we will be happy. But somehow, we are not. Most of us have tasted happiness temporarily on occasions when we have had some new or repeated desired experiences like falling or being in love, acquiring a car or a home, getting married, having a child, going on vacation, getting a job promotion, doing something exciting, etc.; or sometimes when our health, finances, work, and relationships are going well. But happiness somehow keeps being elusive. Sometimes we are happy, sometimes we are not. It seems to be always one step ahead. Most of us have felt it but we do not live it constantly. The problem is that virtues like love, happiness, peace, joy and so on do not reside outside of us, cannot be found or acquired, and are not a goal or a destination. The...

WHAT LIFE IS ABOUT… (PART 3)

Image
Life is about:  building relationships based on love and freedom, as opposed to building them based on fear or personal goals/interests. understanding that growth is an evolutionary process, as opposed to deep rooted traditions, rituals, creeds, and doctrines. living consciously every single moment (here and now), as opposed to living unconsciously and automatically in the past or the future. experiencing everything to the fullest, as opposed to having faith in something you do not know or have not experienced. pursuing our full potential as human beings, as opposed to just living a meaningless biological, material life. taking responsibility for who we are, as opposed to victimizing ourselves and blaming everyone else for what has happened to us. being grateful for absolutely everything, as opposed to taking anything for granted, feeling entitled and/or always wanting. taking an inner pathless path, without destination, milestones, or even sign posts ...

THE STRUGGLE FOR BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS

Image
Amid all the unrest currently here in the U.S., it is so sad to see today, in the XXI century, after thousands of years of living together as human beings, almost 250 years as a country, and 155 years as free men and women (the abolition of slavery in 1865), Americans, and the world, are still divided by labels like race, religion, caste, ethnicity, language, political beliefs, etc. The United States is a country that takes pride in its origins, founders, accomplishments, freedoms, way of life, democracy, and so many other things, but it is also a country that continues to struggle for some of the most basic human rights like equality and freedom of race and religion, education, health care, and food and housing among many others. It is also a country that loves to use labels to categorize everything. Unfortunately, using labels is a double-edge sword. The use of labels can be troublesome, and it is worse when those labels are used to categorize human beings. Certainly, labels ca...
